The most common ones are: Poor technique, poor posture, using the computer for more than hours each day, long hours of gaming, not taking frequent breaks, having a job that requires constant computer usage, loose joints, lack of exercise, having arthritis, diabetes, or other medical conditions, high-pressure environment, unhealthy or stressful sedentary lifestyle, keeping your fingernails long, lack of sleep, obesity, the fear of asking for accommodation, and being in denial about your risk.
Bu there are ways to nip it in the bud — and alleviate the worst symptoms. Repetitive strain injury RSI causes pain, weakness, tingling and stiffness of the muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves or other soft tissues and joints in the upper limbs from neck to fingers. It is also called upper limb disorder, cumulative trauma disorder or occupational overuse syndrome. Nip it in the bud by taking short, frequent breaks from repetitive tasks such as typing.
Check the ergonomics of your work station and try not to slouch at your desk. Proper typing is key to preventing RSI. Try to get up from your desk every 30 minutes and move your neck and shoulders to release tension.
A minute break every hour a stroll to the loo or to make a drink is advised. Stress can also be a contributing factor. Jobs that involve repetitive movements can lead to RSI, such as working on an assembly line, at a supermarket checkout, or on a computer.
Your work environment should be as comfortable as possible. You should ideally have a workplace assessment so that any adjustments needed can be made. If you work at a computer all day, make sure your seat, keyboard, mouse and screen are positioned so they cause the least amount of strain - check how you measure up.
