You can't fly directly to the island, but you can book a flight to the nearby Skiathos Island and then take a ferry. There are also plenty of great accommodations available in every price range on Skopelos, many of which were used by the film's cast and crew. Among the locations on Skopelos—which was called Kalokairi in the film—the producers say a "mountainous peninsula" near Glisteri was used as the filming location where Sophie leaves for her wedding.
Additionally, a cliff on this same peninsula was used for the cliff jumping scene with Sophie and her potential fathers, and the cast picnicked on a beach south of Agnondas off of Stafylos Road. Damouchari is located on the eastern coast of Greece, just about 30 minutes from Volos and directly north of Athens. Although Dmaouchari was primarily where the crew stayed during filming, much of the footage captured here was combined with images shot on Skopelos and Skiathos.
Many scenes in the film featuring a beach are located at Damouchari's Blue Beach. The fictional hotel featured in the film, Villa Donna , was portrayed as being placed on the cliffs above Glysteri Beach on Skopelos, but most of the Villa Donna scenes were shot back at the studio in Hollywood and married to Greek backgrounds later.
However, when the dancers in the film flit from the Villa Donna through olive groves later in the movie, those groves were shot at Douchari in the Mouresi area of Greece, along the Pelion Coast outside of Volos. When you visit Agios Ioannis chapel, the parking is at the bottom of the hill in front of the beach cafe. I suspect that in high season and at weekends this gorgeous location will get crowded with parking spaces tight, so time your visit accordingly.
The cafe serves food and drinks on the beach and runs the beach beds and umbrellas that you can rent. After visiting the chapel, I can recommend walking down to the pretty beach to cool off in the clear turquoise waters.
You can leave your things on the rock or pay to use the sun-beds that are serviced by the cafe who will bring you drinks and snacks. Agios Ioannis is one of the key locations on the Mamma Mia tour and if you are nervous of narrow, winding roads, you may prefer to visit on the tour and let someone else do the driving.

For the filming, a jetty and a beach bar were added, although both were removed once filming was complete. Before things get too steamy, Sky is dragged away by his groomsmen who goof about with flippers and masks on the jetty.
This scene was filmed at the western end of the beach where the white crags are clothed with green pines, making a pretty backdrop. For this scene a small beach bar was built at the rocky east end of the beach. Although the jetty and beach bar that feature in Mamma Mia are no longer there, this is an easy beach to spend time on. Kastani offers a busy beach cafe and lots of sun-beds as well as a water-sports rental, with a party atmosphere on summer evenings.
Kastani beach is also much visited by Mamma Mia fans and island coach tours so if you find it too crowded, just head to the equally beautiful Milia beach which is next along the coast.
Another beautiful beach that makes an appearance is Glysteri, which is one of the closest to Skopelos Town Chora. The olive groves above the beach were also used for some of the general scenes, such as the one where Sophie sets off from Villa Donna for her wedding on a donkey. The setting here is gorgeous and the location within a deep inlet means that the beach is somewhat protected and calmer in windy weather.
With pine covered rocks and clear turquoise water, the stretch of coast at Cape Amarandos in Skopelos makes an idyllic backdrop for some of the scenes in Mamma Mia. This scene uses a compilation of views of the cliffs above Glysteri and Cape Amarandos where the girls run up the steep rocky path to Villa Donna. These idyllic sailing scenes on sparkling turquoise waters under the rocky cliffs were shot around Cape Amarandos in Skopelos, where there are lots of hidden coves and rocky swimming places.
You can follow the dirt track with a jeep from the fishing port of Agnontas or walk along the top of the cliffs to discover some of these swimming places for yourself, although the access can be quite challenging and much easier by boat. Alternatively just enjoy a relaxing lunch at one of the fish tavernas in Agnontas near Cape Amarandos, and contemplate the beauty of the bay and pine clad hillside. We chose to stay at Panormos, which has one of the best beaches in Skopelos with a wide selection of beach bars and tavernas.
We were really happy with our choice, as Panormos offered wonderful swimming, a well stocked local shop, plenty of eating out options and easy proximity to Skopelos town. Katerina Apartments — a great budget option where we stayed, set down a lane a short walk from the beach, in a quiet location with beautiful gardens. Psarianos Beachfront apartments — a stylish mid price option of studios in an old olive press with an enviable location right on the beach and a shady courtyard garden for sitting outside.
A few of the scenes from Mamma Mia were filmed on the Greek mainland on the Pelion peninsula, close to the Sporades islands of Skopelos and Skiathos. We spent 10 days touring around the Pelion and can highly recommend the region for the pretty mountain villages with shady squares and its glorious, unspoiled beaches. In the scene shot at Damouchari Port, Donna arrives in her battered jeep down the dirt track to greet her two friends Rosie and Tanya who have just arrived on the ferry and together they relive their old Dynamo days.
Locals we met were happy to share their memories of the filming which involved many of the local women as extras in the Dancing Queen sequence. The production crew spent a month before the scenes were shot here, making sure that the charming cobbled streets of Damouchari looked just right to represent the pretty Greek island village on Kalokairi. A short walk past the port and through the cobbled streets of the hamlet brings you to the gorgeous Damouchari beach.
All areas were identified after extensive research and Skopelos, Skiathos and Damouchari were selected from 21 Greek islands, and the main criterion was the enchanting green as the producers wanted the film to have a green landscape. The following scene was shot between Milia and Kastani, while in the film it continues in other locations of our island.
The beach Kastani, with the turquoise waters and the surrounding sea area of Milia beach. In Kastani beach during the film was placed a wooden pier which was removed immediately after the end of filming, the bar scene is also not there , the beach has now an organized beach bar Kastani. In the area you will only be able to just enjoy the view the arched entrance has now moved to the beach Glisteri.
The point offers a superb sunrise The mountainous peninsula near the beach Glisteri Nisi Area Glisteri Skopelos , was the point of departure for the wedding of Sophie. A Cliff near the top of this peninsula , also is the spot where Sophie, the Bill, Harry and Sam sang parts Our Last summer, before jump from the rocks in the water.
Close to beach Glisteri So in Skopelos Island was the supposed entrance to the Villa Donna you will be able to see only the views as the rest were scenes that were adapted to the landscape in the studios of Pinewood. In a piece of film magic of effects of Pinewood Studios and the landscape of the island blended seamlessly. The dancing Dancing Queen starts in the bedroom of Villa Donna and opens to the courtyard both scenes were filmed at Pinewood , then extended to outside the Villa Donna the arch in Glisteri Skopelos Island.
The trail continues to the port - in the olives and ends at the port where the scenes were filmed in the romantic town of Damouhari in Mouresi along the coast of eastern Pelion in mainland Greece.
Agios Ioannis sto Kastri Saint John at the castle The beautiful wedding scenes were filmed in the church of Agios Ioannis sto Kastri in Skopelos about an hour from the town of Skopelos , north of Glossa village , where Donna sings The winner takes it all on Sam.
