He tries it again, put two more old letters on fire that he was carrying in his picket but no one notices. When that fails, he throws coins onto the sidewalk below, again no success.
Standing there, helpless, he is sure that he will fall to his death that night and the fact that he has left his wallet on the dresser makes him grimmer. All he has now is the yellow sheet which will not even be enough to help identify his body.
It was of no use; he wishes he was with Clare watching the show and regrets the time he has spent on the not-at-all-important research, outright neglecting his beloved wife. Not willing to give up without a final try, he decides to punch the glass. There were two outcomes in his mind - one, if he is in luck, he will be able to break the glass and finally be able to open the window and the other - if his fist doesn't go through the glass he will loose his balance because of the rebound and he will fall to his death.
He was ready to take the chance for he was sure it was the his last chance to save himself. He prepares himself for a few minutes and finally yells his wife's name and strikes the glass. I had to read this book in English class with a partner. I'm quite a big fan of suspense so I took an immediate liking towards the short story. When I started reading it, I found the main character, Tom, interesting. He neglects his wife Clare and his life around him, focusing on his job at Wholesale Groceries. As he started to get onto the ledge where his paper was at, I started to feel nervous for him and I had many thoughts running through my mind.
Thankfully, when Tom made it back into his a I had to read this book in English class with a partner. Thankfully, when Tom made it back into his apartment, I felt relief. I also felt happy for Tom because he finally figures out he was wasting his whole life doing something other than spending time with his wife. He races out the door to find her in the last part. This short story should now remain a favorite of mine thanks to my English class.

Jack Finney's writing is full of unexpected twists and turns which makes this short story exciting until the very last word. Highly recommended. Note: don't read this book while high above the ground.

My favorite part was when he would do anything for the yellow paper but then realized that he should of done more things than doing work all the time.
At the beginning of the story I thought this story was going to be stupid but after I got into the story I started to like the story. The author did a good job at describing how Tom lived and how hard he worked. The thing I really liked was how Tom tried to get inside of his house but he tried to get inside so many ways like lighting a piece of paper on fire and trying to call for neighbors.
